Air hockey is a fun game.
Air hockey is a fast game.

Air hockey is a fast sport played on a tabletop.
Players try to score goals in slits at each end. The first player to reach seven points wins a match. In big contests, players use special 8-foot tables. They use mallets called high-tops. These look like small plastic hats.
People play this game in many countries. There are big groups like the USAA. They run world championships.
Air hockey is a fast tabletop sport for two players.
The magic of the game comes from the table itself. The surface is very smooth and slippery. It has many tiny vent holes built into it. These holes blow a thin cushion of air upward. This air makes the puck hover above the surface. Because it hovers, there is very little friction. This allows the puck to glide with great speed.
This technology began with older tools called air tables. In the 1940s, air tables helped heavy boxes slide easily. Later, a professor named John Stull built an air track. He used a vacuum cleaner to lift things. In the late 1960s, a company called Ealing made tabletop versions. Between 1969 and 1972, Brunswick Billiards employees created the game we know. Engineers Phil Crossman, Bob Kenrick, and Brad Baldwin started the project. Bob Lemieux later helped make it more like ice hockey.
Serious players follow many strict rules during a match. The first person to reach seven points wins. You must use only one mallet at a time. You cannot touch the puck with your hands. This is called "palming," and it is not allowed. If you use your hands to block a goal, it is a technical foul. In these cases, the other player gets a free shot.
Many groups organize big competitions for these players. The United States Air Hockey Association (USAA) was formed in 1975. They hold championships every year. In 2015, the Air Hockey Players Association (AHPA) also started. They crowned Colin Cummings as a world champion in 2015.

The mechanics of the game rely on a thin cushion of air.
Equipment used in competitive play is very specific. The pucks are discs made of Lexan polycarbonate resin.
The history of air hockey traces back to older air table technology. In the 1940s, air tables acted as conveyors for heavy objects like cardboard boxes. These early tables used large holes plugged by ball bearings to lift objects. In the early 1960s, physicists used air tracks for educational purposes. Professor John Stull created a simple air track using a vacuum cleaner under a perforated surface. By the late 1960s, the Ealing Corporation developed a tabletop using a honeycomb structure between fiberboard or plexiglass sheets. Between 1969 and 1972, employees at Brunswick Billiards created the modern game. Engineers Phil Crossman, Bob Kenrick, and Brad Baldwin began the project. Bob Lemieux later refined the game by adding slit-like goals with photodetectors.
Competitive play follows a strict set of rules to ensure fairness.
Professional players use advanced techniques to improve their skill.
Today, air hockey is supported by several international organizations.
