Ai Iijima was a famous media star in Japan. She did many different jobs in entertainment. Early in her career, she was a very successful adult video actress. She appeared in more than 100 of these films. Later, she moved into mainstream media. She became a regular on daytime TV talk shows. People called her a "tarento," which is a word for a TV personality. She was known for being very honest about her life.

Iijima worked in many creative ways. She acted in fantasy films for the Toei Company. She even wrote her own manga series called "Time Traveler Ai." In the world of video games, she did voice acting for a game called "Magical Pop'n" in 1995. She also released a game for the Sega Saturn in 1997. This game was called "Good Island Cafe." It worked like an interactive movie. Players could watch interviews with her in the game.

In 2000, Iijima wrote a famous book. It was called "Platonic Sex." The story was semi-autobiographical, which means it was partly about her own life. The book told of a girl who left home and became an adult movie star. It was a huge success. The book sold over 1.7 million copies. It was even translated into many languages. These included Korean, Chinese, Spanish, and Italian.

Iijima used her fame to help people. She worked on campaigns to teach the public about HIV/AIDS. This was a very important cause. At that time, few Japanese celebrities wanted to speak about it. She spoke at a United Nations program in Tokyo in 2004. She also used her own blog to share information. Her bravery helped many people learn more about this health issue.

Iijima retired from show business in March 2007. Her final appearance was on a program called "KinSuma." It was a very emotional night for her fans. She died on December 24, 2008, in her Tokyo apartment. Doctors found she had died from pneumonia. A large memorial service was held at the Tokyo Prince Hotel. About 700 friends and relatives attended the service. Another 1,500 people came to offer their prayers. All the money from that day went to help prevent AIDS.
