In 2024, tools like Sora made text-to-video generation more common for advertisements. 
This rapid growth has significant global impacts. In 2024, China and the U.S. held more than 75% of all AI patents. While China had more patents, the U.S. had 35% more patents per applicant company. The rise of AI also requires massive amounts of electricity. This has increased the demand on power grids. To meet this need, Microsoft signed a deal in 2024 to use power from the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor. This reactor is expected to reopen in 2028 to power data centers.
As AI becomes more common, people hold very different views. Many believe AI will help with medicine, weather forecasting, and data analysis. However, others worry about the ethical use of generative AI. There are concerns about misinformation and "deep-faked" videos used for politics. Some people fear that AI will replace human jobs or weaken human creativity. Economists like Erik Brynjolfsson believe AI will cause a productivity boom. Others, like Robert Gordon, remain more pessimistic about these changes.
