Ahvaz is a major metropolitan city located in the Khuzestan province of Iran. It serves as the capital for the province, the county, and the district. The city is positioned near the border with Iraq. It sits along the banks of the Karun River. This river is the largest in Iran by volume.

Because of its location and resources, Ahvaz is a vital industrial and transportation hub. It is also famously known as the Oil Capital of Iran.

The Karun River is central to the city's identity and function. It is one of only two navigable rivers in the country. To connect the eastern and western parts of the city, nine large bridges have been built across the water. These structures have earned Ahvaz the nickname "the City of Bridges."

The river provides a path for commerce and shapes the urban layout. The city's growth is closely tied to how people move across and along this water.

Ahvaz is a diverse urban center with a population exceeding 1.3 million people. The metropolitan area shows a steady increase in inhabitants according to census results. The population includes Persians, Arabs, and groups such as the Qashqai and Kurds. This diversity is reflected in the many languages spoken in the streets. While Persian is the official language, many residents are bilingual. They may also speak Khuzestāni Arabic, Southern Kurdish, or Neo-Mandaic.

Local dialects like Bakhtiari, Dezfuli, and Shushtari are also common.

The history of the area stretches back to the ancient Achaemenid period. In ancient times, the settlement was known as Taryana. It was located along the Royal Road, which connected Persepolis to Sardis. Part of this royal route crossed the Karun River at this site. Taryana was also a significant center for learning as part of the Academy of Gondishapur.

The city's name and importance have changed many times through different eras.

During the reign of Ardashir I, the city was renamed Hormazd-Ardeshir. The king built a dam over the Karun River to increase the city's significance. This helped the city become the capital of the province of Susiana. The city was divided into two main sections. One side, called Hūǰestān-vāčār, was the commercial market. The other side, called Horamshir, served as the administrative and aristocratic center.

Many historians believe the name Ahvaz comes from the ancient Uzi people.

The 20th century brought massive economic and structural changes to the region. In the 1880s, the Karun River was dredged to reopen it to commerce. A railway was later built, reaching the city in 1929. This allowed the city to link river traffic with rail transport. The discovery of oil in the early 20th century brought immense wealth. This transformed Ahvaz into a major industrial center.

During World War II, the city even hosted a camp for 4,000 Polish refugees.

Modern Ahvaz is defined by its large-scale industry and complex social history. The Foolad Ahvaz steel facility is a major industrial presence near the city. This company is also known for its football club, Foolad F.C., which won the Iran Premier Football League in 2005.

However, the city has also faced significant challenges. It was close to the front lines during the Iran-Iraq War from 1980 to 1988. More recently, the city has experienced social unrest and protests. These events have shaped the political and social landscape of the region.
