As a ruler, Ahmad was very strict and liked to control everything. He was an autocratic leader, which means he held most of the power himself. He did not like to hear new ideas or suggestions. Some reports said he had to approve even tiny things. For example, a government truck might need his permission to move in the city of Ta'izz. He also liked to keep his power close to him at all times. This style of ruling made many people want to change the government.

Ahmad's life shows how much one person can change a country. He lived through a time of great tension between different nations. He used airplanes for his own travel, even though his father had banned them. His rule ended when he died on September 19, 1962. Shortly after he passed away, his kingdom fell apart. The ruling family lost their control over Yemen very quickly. His story is a major part of how modern Yemen began.
