The African National Congress, or ANC, is a political party in South Africa.

In 1948, a new government began a system called apartheid. This system used unfair laws to keep people apart based on race. The ANC worked hard to stop these laws. They used strikes and boycotts to show they disagreed.
In 1994, things changed. South Africa held its first fair election. The ANC won, and Nelson Mandela became President.

To fight for change, the ANC used many different methods. In the early years, they focused on writing letters to ask for rights. Later, they moved toward mass politics to reach more people. This included organizing strikes, boycotts, and stay-aways to protest unfair laws.

The ANC has a long and difficult history. It was founded on January 8, 1912, in Bloemfontein.

During the years it was banned, the ANC had to work from other places. This period is often called being in exile. The group moved its headquarters to places like Lusaka, Zambia.

The ANC's role in the world has changed over time. For a while, some countries like the United States called them a terrorist organization. However, they later became key players in peace talks to end apartheid. Since 1994, the ANC has provided all five of South Africa's presidents.
