The African Games are a huge sports event. They happen every four years. Athletes from all over the African continent come to compete. The first games were held in 1965 in Brazzaville, Congo. Around 2,500 athletes took part in those first games. Egypt won the most medals back then.

Many different sports are played at the games. Athletes can try swimming or running. They can play football or basketball. Some even play chess or archery. Since 1999, the games have included Para sports. These are sports for athletes with a disability. This helps more people join the fun.

Different groups help run the games. The African Union is one main group. They also work with ANOCA and the AASC. These groups help with the rules and the money. The games help bring many nations together. They use sport to help the continent grow. In 2019, 54 countries joined the games in Morocco. The 13th games were held in Accra, Ghana, in 2023.
