DNA shows that this extinct genus even shared significant ancestry with the African forest elephant.

These groups include adult cows, their daughters, and subadult sons. While females are very active in the group, males often live more independently. They can distinguish between hundreds of low-frequency infrasonic calls. These sounds are too low for humans to hear, but they allow elephants to communicate across vast distances.
