About 16.5 million years ago, a group called Zygolophodon entered North America. This group eventually gave rise to the genus Mammut. In Eurasia, the species "Mammut" borsoni went extinct about 2 to 2.5 million years ago. However, mastodons lived in North America until about 11,000 years ago.

Some mammutids were truly massive. The species "Mammut" borsoni was one of the largest land mammals of all time. An average male of this species had a very high body weight. Their tusks were also incredible. They had the longest tusks known of any animal. Most mastodons had large upper tusks that curved upward. In contrast, the tusks of very early mammutids were small and curved downward and outward. These massive sizes show how successful the family was in different environments.
