It is located in the western part of the country. This region is a significant part of Turkey's geography. It sits next to the Aegean Sea to the west. To the north, it borders the Marmara region. The Central Anatolia Region lies to the east. The Mediterranean Region is located to the south. Of the four coastal regions in Turkey, the Aegean Region has the longest coastline.

The climate of the region changes based on your distance from the sea. Near the coast, the area has a Mediterranean climate. This means the summers are hot and dry. The winters in these coastal areas are mild to cool and wet. As you move into the interior, the weather shifts. The interior has a semi-arid continental climate. The summers in the interior remain hot and dry. However, the winters there are cold and snowy. This transition creates different environments across the land.

The region is divided into several specific subdivisions. These include the Edremit Area and the Bakırçay Area. There is also the Gediz Area and the İzmir Area. Other sections include the Küçük Menderes Area and the Büyük Menderes Area. The Menteşe Area is another subdivision. There is also an area called the Inner Western Anatolia Section. These divisions help organize the different parts of the region.

The region contains many different provinces. Some provinces are located entirely within the Aegean Region. These include Aydın, İzmir, Manisa, and Uşak. Other provinces are mostly within the region. These include Denizli, Kütahya, Muğla, and Afyaonkarahisar. Some provinces are only partially in the Aegean Region. These include Balıkesir, Bilecik, Bursa, Çanakkale, and Eskişehir. İzmir is the largest city in the entire region.

The ecology of the region is defined by its ecoregions. These ecoregions are all terrestrial, meaning they are on land. They are part of the larger Palearctic realm. The region features Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub. Scientists classify different parts of the land into specific types. Some areas are Aegean and Western Turkey sclerophyllous and mixed forests. Others are Anatolian conifer and deciduous mixed forests. There are also Southern Anatolian montane conifer and deciduous forests.

History is deeply visible through many ancient sites. The Library of Celsus in Ephesus is a famous example. The Romans built this library between 114 and 117. Another site is the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus. King Croesus of Lydia built this temple in the 6th century BC. It was known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You can also find the ancient city of Aizanoi in the region. These landmarks show the long history of the area.

The Aegean region connects natural systems with human history. Its long coastline and varied climate support many different life forms. The different forest types show how the land changes from the coast to the mountains. The many cities, like Manisa and Aydın, sit within these varied landscapes. From the dry interior to the wet coast, the region is diverse. It remains a vital part of Turkey's geography and culture.
