It works by showing the useful qualities of a thing. Companies use a method called branding to do this. Branding links a name or an image to certain feelings.

This helps people remember the product. Some ads want to make a sale right away. This is called direct-response advertising. Not all ads are for selling things. Political parties and religious groups also use them. Even governments can use advertising to share news.

Advertising has been around for a very long time.

In the Middle Ages, many people could not read. Shops used pictures instead of words to show what they sold. A baker might use a bag of flour. A cobbler might use a picture of a boot.

In 1859, a British firm created the first slogan. The slogan was "Beechams Pills: Worth a guinea a box." This helped the company become a global brand. In 1840, Volney B. Palmer started a modern agency. He was a space broker in Philadelphia. He bought newspaper space at a low price. Then he resold it to advertisers for more money. Later, N.W. Ayer & Son became a full-service agency in 1869.

Modern advertising grew during the Industrial Revolution.
