Originally called "The Camelot Project," the PDF was designed to display text, raster graphics, vector graphics, and fonts. It became an ISO international standard in 2008. Adobe's tools work through various processes, such as vector-based illustration in Illustrator. This method uses mathematical paths to keep drawings sharp at any size.

Adobe offers many different types of software products. Its flagship products include Photoshop for image editing and Illustrator for vector creation.

It also provides Acrobat for managing PDF documents. For video and audio, it offers Premiere Pro and Audition.

The company's product lines have evolved from individual programs to large bundles. It once offered the Adobe Creative Suite, which was a collection of software sold as a package. Now, the company primarily uses Adobe Creative Cloud. This is a subscription-based service where users pay a recurring fee for access to the tools.

The history of Adobe is tied to its founders, John Warnock and Charles Geschke. They founded the company in December 1982 after leaving Xerox PARC. The company started in John Warnock's garage. The name "Adobe" comes from Adobe Creek in Los Altos, California. This creek is named after the clay used to make mudbricks. In 1982, Steve Jobs attempted to buy the company for $5 million. The founders refused to sell the entire company but instead sold him 19 percent of the shares. This deal made Adobe the first company in Silicon Valley to become profitable in its first year.

Adobe has grown significantly through many large acquisitions. In 2005, Adobe completed a $3.4 billion acquisition of Macromedia.

This gave Adobe control over important tools like Flash, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks. In 2003, it purchased Cool Edit Pro for $16.5 million, which later became Adobe Audition. In 2009, Adobe acquired the digital marketing company Omniture for $1.8 billion. This helped integrate marketing tools into the Adobe Marketing Cloud. These acquisitions allowed Adobe to expand from design tools into digital marketing and web analytics.

Despite its success, Adobe has faced several challenges and legal issues. The company faced criticism when it switched from one-time purchases to the Creative Cloud subscription model. In 2024, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice filed a joint civil lawsuit regarding Adobe's subscription pricing and termination fees. The company also dealt with a major security breach in 2013. During this event, source code was stolen and over 150 million customer records were made available for download. Additionally, in 2013, Adobe was part of a settlement involving 64,000 employees regarding compensation practices. This settlement totaled $324.5 million.

Today, Adobe is a massive global operation with more than 26,000 employees. It maintains major development operations across the United States and in India. In the U.S., these operations are located in Newton, New York City, Arden Hills, Lehi, Seattle, Austin, and San Francisco. In India, major operations are in Noida and Bangalore. Adobe's influence extends across many fields, from professional filmmaking to digital marketing. Its software remains a standard in the creative industries worldwide.
