They sit in the South Pacific Ocean. They are north of New Guinea. These islands are part of Papua New Guinea. They are also called the Manus Islands. This name comes from Manus, the largest island.

The islands are covered in thick rainforests. Most of the islands are very green. Many animals live here that live nowhere else. You can find rare birds, bats, and frogs. Some birds, like the Manus fantail, are in danger. There are also special fruit bats and snails.

The weather is warm all year. It rains a lot, especially from June to August. The islands were made by volcanoes a long time ago.

People have lived here for a very long time. They arrived about 40,000 years ago. Later, a group called the Lapita people lived here. They were known for making great pottery. They also built houses on stilts. Today, the main town is Lorengau. Most people travel between islands by boat. Some people use an airport on Los Negros Island.
