The Adirondack Mountains are a huge group of mountains in northeastern New York. This area forms a large, circular dome shape.

It is a very special place because it sits in its own province. This province is part of the Appalachian Highlands. The mountains are surrounded by other areas like the St. Lawrence province to the north. There are more than 100 peaks in this region. Mount Marcy is the highest peak in all of New York State. Many hikers love to visit the Adirondack High Peaks. This is a famous list of 46 peaks that are all over 4,600 feet tall.

Water is a huge part of life in the Adirondacks. There are over 200 named lakes in the mountains. You can also find more than 3,000 smaller ponds and bodies of water.

Some of the most famous lakes are Lake George and Lake Placid. The region also has more than 100 rivers flowing through it. The land was shaped by giant sheets of ice a long time ago. These glaciers left behind things like eskers and kettle holes. The melting ice also left behind many large rocks called glacial erratics. This history of ice makes the landscape look very unique today.

People have lived in this region for a very long time. The first humans were Paleo-Indians who arrived after the last ice age. Later, groups like the Mohawk and Oneida people used the mountains for hunting. They had a special way of sharing the land called the "Dish with One Spoon."

This meant they shared the hunting resources together. European explorers arrived much later in the 1600s. At first, many Europeans thought the area was a scary, wild place. They did not realize how much history was already there. They thought it was just a vast wilderness with no people.

Even though the mountains look new, they are made of very old rocks. These rocks are more than 1 billion years old. They started as thick sediments at the bottom of a sea.

Over time, these rocks changed into different types like marble and granite. Geologists think a "hot spot" deep underground helps push the mountains up. This uplift happens at a rate of about 0.01 millimeters every year. This makes the mountains a mix of ancient stone and new movement. You can even find colorful minerals like green diopside in the marble here.

Today, most of this beautiful area is inside the Adirondack Park. The state of New York created the park in 1892. They wanted to protect the natural resources and give people a place to visit. The park is huge and covers 20 percent of all New York land. It is a place where people go to escape busy city life. The weather can be quite different depending on the season. Summers are warm and rainy, but winters are long, cold, and snowy. It is a wonderful place to explore the wonders of nature.
