The mountains rise at a rate of about 0.01 millimeters every year. This uplift is faster than the rate of denudation, which is the wearing away of the land. Some evidence of this activity includes earthquake swarms. These swarms have been recorded near Blue Mountain Lake. Some earthquakes have exceeded a magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale.
Ice has played a major role in shaping the current landscape. Between 95,000 and 20,000 years ago, the Laurentide Ice Sheet covered the area. This was part of the Pleistocene glacial periods. When the ice finally melted, it took nearly 10,000 years. The retreating glaciers left behind many distinct physical features. One example is the esker, which is a long, winding ridge of sand and gravel. The Rainbow Lake esker is one such feature. You can also find glacial erratics, which are large rocks left by moving ice. Temperatures can drop to between -10 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter nights are often even more frigid. This harsh weather and high elevation create a unique environment for the plants and animals living there.
