She was born in London in 1853. As a young woman, she studied dance and acrobatics. She also learned to ride a velocipede, which is an old kind of bicycle. Later, she moved to New York City. She began her magic career with her husband, Alexander Herrmann. They toured the world together. They performed in places like Mexico and Europe.

Adelaide had many great tricks. In one act, she used hypnotism to make a bride float. The bride wore white silk. Adelaide showed there were no wires holding her up. Another hit was her "Noah's Ark" show. In this act, cats and dogs in animal costumes climbed out of a boat. White doves also flew from the windows.

After her husband died, Adelaide continued to perform alone. She wanted to be a leader in her field. She toured for over 25 years. She even performed on Broadway. She was a very skilled and brave performer.
