It covers a total area of 324 square kilometers. The city includes the central and northern parts of the Adapazarı agglomeration. As of 2022, the population reached 281,489 people. The city is located near the Sakarya River, which provides the name for the entire province. It serves as a vital hub for both industry and regional administration.

The history of this region is incredibly deep and varied. The area was known as Agrilion in 378 BC. Many different groups of people have lived here over the centuries. These include the Phrygians, Bithynians, Cimmerians, Lydians, Greeks, and Persians. The identity of the region was shaped by Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine rulers. One very important historical site is the Sangarius Bridge.

The Byzantine Emperor Justinian I built this bridge in 533 AD. It was a key part of the old military road leading east from Constantinople.

Different waves of people have shaped the local population over time. In 1400, 400 Armenian immigrant families moved to the area. They were escaping oppression from Timur in Sivas. They named their new home "Donigaşen" after their leaders. The region later saw the settlement of Turk households. The current inhabitants are known as Manavs. Native Muslims include Armenians and Greeks who converted to Islam over time.

Adapazarı is recognized as one of the most important industrial capitals in Turkey. It hosts several massive manufacturing plants. The Toyota Motor Corporation operates a large automobile factory here. There is also a Hyundai EURotem factory that produces trains. Other major companies include Otokar, which makes buses and military vehicles. The Tank Pallet 1st Main Maintenance facility is also a significant defense contractor. This industrial strength helps drive the local economy forward.

Agriculture and forestry also play a major role in the economy. The region produces many different natural goods. Farmers grow tobacco and various vegetables. The area is also known for producing hazelnuts, which are a specific variety of nut. Other products include walnut-wood and silk cocoons. This mix of heavy industry and traditional farming creates a diverse economic base. The city has worked hard to renovate its infrastructure after the 1999 Marmara earthquake.
