She was born on 10 December 1815. Her father was the famous poet Lord Byron. Her mother was a reformer named Anne Isabella Milbanke. Ada was the only legitimate child they had together. Her father left England not long after she was born. He died in April 1824 when Ada was only eight. Because of this, Ada did not have a relationship with him. Her mother was the main person in her life.

Ada spent much of her life studying math and science.

She was often ill during her childhood years. In 1829, she had measles that left her paralyzed for a time. She even had to use crutches to walk by 1831. Despite these hard times, she studied very hard. Her mother encouraged math to keep her mind focused. Ada eventually met many famous scientists and thinkers. She met the author Charles Dickens and the scientist Michael Faraday.

In 1833, Ada met a mathematician named Charles Babbage.
