For example, doctors might use it with other therapies for back pain. However, many scientists say there is no good evidence that it works. They call it a pseudoscience because its theories are not based on scientific knowledge.

A person lies very still during the treatment. A trained worker inserts about five to twenty thin needles into the skin. These needles are often made of stainless steel. This metal is flexible and does not rust or break. The needles usually stay in place for ten to twenty minutes. Sometimes, the worker might also use heat, pressure, or even laser light. They might move the needles by spinning or flicking them. This can cause a feeling called de qi, which feels like tingling or numbness.

This practice has a very long history.

It is believed to have started around 100 BC in China. This was near the time a book called The Inner Classic of Huang Di was published. Over many years, acupuncture spread to other places. It went to Korea in the 6th century AD. Then, it moved to Japan through medical missionaries. Later, it reached Europe, starting with France. In the 20th century, it became more common in the United States.

There are many different ways to do acupuncture today.

In Japan, workers sometimes use a small guide tube to help. Korean acupuncture often uses copper needles and focuses on the hands. Traditional methods might also include moxibustion, which uses heat from burning dried plants. Some people also use cupping therapy to create suction on the skin. The global market for acupuncture was worth US$24.55 billion in 2017. Europe had the largest share of this market at 32.7%. Asia-Pacific followed with a 29.4% share. The Americas had a 25.3% share.

It is very important to stay safe during treatment.

Practitioners should always use clean, single-use needles. This helps to prevent infections or accidents. If a worker is not careful, serious problems can happen. Most side effects are very minor if the worker is well-trained. Some people use different styles, like Western medical acupuncture. This version focuses less on old philosophies and more on medical diagnoses. Many modern workers no longer believe in old ideas like qi or meridians. They focus more on the physical act of using the needles.
