A major disaster changed Aceh in the 21st century. On December 26, 2004, a massive earthquake and tsunami struck. The epicenter was very close to the Aceh coast. The tsunami devastated much of the western coast. 

Aceh has gone through many different official names. From 1511 to 1945, it was known as Aceh Darussalam. In 1959, it became the Daerah Istimewa Aceh. It had other names like Nanggroë Aceh Darussalam between 2001 and 2009. It returned to the name Aceh in 2009. The region remains a vital part of Indonesia. Its history of trade and religion shaped Southeast Asia. It remains a place of great cultural importance.
