Before ACARS, pilots used voice radios to talk to the ground. This took a lot of work. Airlines wanted a better way to track flight times. They wanted to avoid mistakes in their reports. In 1978, a company called ARINC made ACARS. It worked like an automatic clock. It used sensors to find out when a plane moved.

These sensors check the doors and the brakes. They can tell when a plane leaves the gate. This is called an OOOI event. OOOI stands for out of the gate, off the ground, on the ground, and into the gate.

ACARS sends many types of data. It can send weather news to the pilots. It can also send news about the plane's health. If a part needs a fix, the plane sends a message. This helps workers plan repairs. Messages travel through radio waves or via satellites in space.

Ground stations receive these notes. They can also send notes back to the plane. This helps the crew stay safe and on time.
