Academic freedom

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Academic freedom is a special right for people in schools. It means teachers have the right to teach their lessons. It also means students have the right to learn without interference. This freedom allows scholars to share new ideas or facts. Sometimes these facts might be unpopular with leaders or political groups. Scholars should be able to speak without fearing they will lose their jobs. This protection helps the mission of the academy succeed.

There are different ways to look at this freedom. A small definition focuses on the right to teach and learn. A larger definition includes the right to criticize social or political things. This larger view includes how experts speak about their specific work. However, academic speech is different from regular free speech. It is subject to quality controls called peer review. This means other experts check the work to ensure it is good.

The idea of academic freedom is very old. Some say it goes back to Socrates in 399 B.C. In 1155, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa gave rights to scholars. He gave them freedom of movement for teaching and studying. In the 1800s, Wilhelm von Humboldt changed how universities worked. He founded the Humboldt University of Berlin. He believed science is a search for knowledge that never ends. His model helped shape many modern colleges in the West.

History shows that losing this freedom can be very dangerous. In the 1930s, the Soviet Union controlled scientific research. A man named Trofim Lysenko used wrong ideas about farming. His ideas were called Lysenkoism. These ideas led to many deaths during the Great Leap Forward in China. It is estimated that 30 million people died in China from these famines. This shows why it is vital to protect true science from politics.

Today, academic freedom is not the same everywhere. It is more common in liberal democratic states. It is harder to find in authoritarian states or during wars. Since 2013, the overall trend has been toward less freedom. Some countries are improving, but others are seeing reductions. People like Michael Polanyi argued that liberty is needed for science to grow. He believed science works best when it is a free exchange of ideas.
