Most meetings have short talks. These talks last from 10 to 30 minutes. They are often followed by a talk from the group. Some speakers are very important. These are called keynote speakers. They might talk for up to 90 minutes.

Some meetings focus on one topic. These are themed conferences. Others cover many topics. These are general conferences. People can meet in person. They can also meet online. Online meetings help people from different time zones join in. Some people must join at night to make this work.

Large meetings are called conferences. Small meetings are called workshops. Some meetings are bad. These are called predatory conferences. They act like real ones but they are not. They take money from people without doing a good job.

An academic conference is a special event for researchers to share their work. These meetings help people exchange new ideas and information. Researchers can learn how to give better presentations to others. They can also get helpful feedback from their peers. It is a great way to find new jobs or work with new partners. These events help people see what is happening in their field of study.

Most conferences use many different types of presentations. Many talks are short and last between 10 and 30 minutes. These talks are often followed by a group discussion. Some very important scholars give keynote lectures. These special talks can last up to 90 minutes. Some meetings also have panel discussions or workshops. There are even "unconferences" where the people attending lead the talks.

History shows that these meetings have been around for a long time. The first international academic conferences appeared in the 19th century. People can meet in person at a building or online through a computer. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many meetings have switched to virtual formats. Some are hybrid, which means they are both in person and online. This allows people from different time zones to join. Some people might even have to join during their night-time.

There are many ways to group these meetings. A large meeting is usually called a conference. A smaller meeting is often called a workshop. Some conferences focus on one topic, which are called themed conferences. Others cover many different topics and are called general conferences. There are also professional conferences for people in related jobs. Large meetings might even have job interviews or social tours.

Organizing a meeting is a big job for a scientific society. They often send out a "Call For Papers" to find speakers. This notice tells people the theme and the deadlines for their work. However, some meetings are not honest. These are called predatory conferences. They pretend to be real but they just want to take money. They do not check the work carefully like real meetings do.

An academic conference is a formal event for researchers to present and discuss scholarly work. These meetings serve as a vital channel for exchanging information between scientists and academics. They function alongside scientific journals and preprint archives to spread new knowledge. Beyond sharing data, participants gain several professional benefits from attending. They can improve their presentation skills and develop an academic habitus, which refers to the habits of scholarly life. Researchers also receive feedback from their peers on their ongoing studies. These events allow for informal communication regarding new job opportunities and future collaborations.

Most conferences rely on various types of presentations to share information. Standard presentations are usually short and concise, lasting between 10 and 30 minutes. These talks are typically followed by a period of group discussion. A major feature of many meetings is the keynote lecture. These are delivered by keynote speakers, who are often scholars of high standing. Keynote lectures are much longer than standard talks, sometimes lasting up to 90 minutes. Some conferences also feature panel discussions to bring multiple perspectives to a single topic. Other formats include round tables, poster sessions, workshops, or even participant-driven "unconferences."

Conferences can be organized into three distinct categories based on their scope. Themed conferences are small meetings organized around one specific topic. General conferences have a much wider focus and include sessions on many different subjects. These are often held annually by regional, national, or international learned societies. The third type is the professional conference, which is not limited to academics. These meetings cover issues that are academically related but involve a broader group of professionals.

There are different ways that people physically or digitally attend these events. Traditionally, conferences were organized as in-person meetings. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused many to switch to virtual or online formats. Many organizations now use a hybrid format, which combines in-person and virtual attendance. Virtual meetings may use synchronous formats, which are live, or asynchronous formats, which use pre-recorded content. Because people join from different time zones, some participants may have to join during their night-time. Some organizers try to fix this by alternating schedules so everyone can participate during the daytime at least once.

Organizing a large meeting requires significant planning and infrastructure. Most meetings are organized by a scientific society or a group of researchers. Large events might hire a Professional Conference Organiser, or PCO, to handle the details. To find speakers, organizers issue a Call For Papers (CFP) or a Call For Abstracts. This document explains the theme, the topics, and the deadlines for submission. Presenters often submit their work through online management services. In larger meetings, academic publishing houses may set up displays, and there may even be job interviews or social tours.

While most conferences are legitimate, some are known as predatory conferences. These meetings are set up to appear like real scientific events, but they are actually exploitative. They do not provide proper editorial control over the presentations being given. Some may even falsely claim that famous academics are involved to look more important. This is an expansion of the predatory publishing business model. This model involves charging authors high fees without providing real services. Examples of conferences labeled as predatory include BIT Life Sciences and SCIgen.

Finally, the academic community faces challenges regarding the environmental impact of these events. Traveling to conferences generates a large amount of airplane traffic. This creates a carbon footprint, which is the total amount of greenhouse gases produced. Many environmental scientists have noted the paradox of needing to fly to discuss sustainability. An analysis of 116 conferences held in 2016 showed that only 4% offered carbon offset options. Furthermore, only 9% of those conferences implemented measures to reduce their environmental impact. Since the pandemic, the use of teleconferencing has increased to help address these issues.
