life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The mountain hickory wattle is a tree from eastern Australia.

People also call it blackwood. This tree can grow as a shrub or a tree. It has dark grey bark. The bark has deep lines in it. The branches are smooth. Some branches have a fine white powder on them.

Most Acacia plants do not have true leaves. This tree has phyllodes. These are parts that act like leaves. They stay green all year. They are long and thin. They have a strong vein in the middle. They also have small veins on the sides. The tree makes pale yellow flowers. These flowers bloom all year long.

This tree grows in many Australian states. It also grows in New Zealand. Long ago, people in New South Wales used the bark. They threw it into waterholes. This helped them catch fish. The bark is not poisonous. It is just astringent. This means it has a sharp taste. The bark has 18% tannin. This is a natural substance found in the bark.
