History shows many different steps toward freedom. In 1315, a king in France said people should be free on French soil. Later, in 1542, Spain made laws to protect Indigenous people. In Japan, a leader named Toyotomi Hideyoshi ended chattel slavery in 1590.

In the late 1700s, many people began to fight for change. In Haiti, formerly enslaved people led a revolution. They won and created the nation of Haiti in 1804. This was the first time a country freed itself from slavery.

In the United States, northern states ended slavery first. A big war called the Civil War happened later. In 1865, the 13th Amendment made slavery illegal. In Brazil, slavery ended in 1888.

In 1948, the United Nations said slavery was against human rights. Today, almost all countries have laws to stop slavery. We must still work to stop human trafficking.
