The city began as a small settlement in the late 8th century. It was founded as a harbor settlement at the Aarhus River mouth. During the Viking Age, the town became a major trade hub. Its location helped it sit on intersecting trade routes. This position linked the area to the Danish straits and fertile countryside. Archaeological finds show the trade was likely linked to Norway. In 2002, archaeologists found a Viking Age shipbuilding yard upriver. This yard was located at Snekkeeng, or Snekke Meadow. It was used for over 400 years from the late 700s until the mid-1200s.

Early Aarhus was a fortified military center. The town used defensive earthen ramparts for protection. These ramparts were built in the early 900s. King Gorm the Old may have ordered these defenses. His son, Harald Bluetooth, later improved and expanded them. These structures encircled the settlement like Viking ring fortresses. The city also saw early religious changes. The first Christian church, Holy Trinity Church, was built around the year 900. This timber structure was built on a former pagan burial site. In 1060, a new stone church called Sankt Nicolai Domkirke was founded. This church stood where the Church of our Lady stands today.

During the Middle Ages, Aarhus became a prosperous religious center. The bishopric of Aarhus grew in influence and territory. It expanded as far as Viborg. In 1441, Christopher III granted the city market town privileges. This charter is considered the city's birth certificate. It provided official recognition of Aarhus as a regional power. By 1477, the city abandoned its old earthen ramparts to allow for expansion. Some of these old defenses remain today as steep slopes by the river. The streets of Volden and Graven still reflect this history.

The Industrial Revolution brought significant growth to the city. Trade began to prosper more in the mid-18th century. In 1810, the harbor was expanded to handle more trade. By the 1830s, factories using steam-driven machinery increased productivity. In 1840, the harbor moved from the river to the coast. This new location was north of the river. It became the largest industrial harbor outside Copenhagen within 15 years. In 1862, the first railway line in Jutland was built in Aarhus. This line connected the city to Randers.
