7z

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A 7z file is a special kind of digital container. It is used to pack many files into one smaller package. This process is called compression. Compression makes files take up much less space on a computer.

This format is very useful because it can hold huge amounts of data. It can support files as large as 16 exbibytes. That is a massive number of bytes! Because it is an open format, anyone can see how it works. This makes it a helpful tool for many different people.

There are many ways the 7z format works to shrink files. One method is called LZMA. This method looks for duplicate parts of text to remove them.

Another way is called solid compression. This works by grouping similar files together into one long stream. By looking at them all at once, the computer finds even more patterns. This helps make the total size even smaller. The format can also use different tools called codecs. These tools can be added to the system later to help it work better.

The 7z format first appeared through a program called 7-Zip. This program is available to everyone under a special license called the GNU Lesser General Public License. In December 2008, the LZMA SDK was placed in the public domain. This means anyone can use the tools that make 7z work. The rules for how 7z is built are shared with the world. Since 2015, these rules have been included with the 7-Zip source code. The latest stable version is version 26.00.

Safety is a very big part of the 7z format. It uses a strong way to hide data called AES-256 bit encryption. You can even use a secret code to hide the names of the files. To make it even harder for hackers, it uses a trick called key stretching. This uses an algorithm based on the SHA-256 hash function. The computer runs this function 524,288 times. This causes a delay on slow computers, but it makes guessing a password much harder. It is still important to choose a very strong password.

You might recognize 7z from how it handles large tasks. If a file is too big, you can split it into many parts. These parts look like xxx.7z.001 and xxx.7z.002. You need every single part to put the files back together. You might also know about ZIP files. 7z is similar to ZIP, but it can sometimes shrink files more. Some other systems use a similar method called .tar.xz. This is used by many computer systems like Debian and Fedora to package their software.
