This event was the deadliest natural disaster of the 21st century for a single country. It affected an estimated three million people. Many people lost their homes and lives in the shaking.

This disaster showed how much damage a single event can cause.

The earthquake happened because of movement deep underground. The Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone runs through this area. This fault system had been locked for 250 years. It was gathering stress like a stretched rubber band.

When the fault finally ruptured, it released that energy. The shaking lasted for less than 30 seconds. It was a shallow quake, which made the damage even worse. The movement happened on blind thrust faults. These are cracks that do not reach the surface.

This sudden movement caused the ground to shake very strongly.

Haiti has a long history of these powerful shakes. During the time Haiti was a French colony, historians recorded them. In 1751, an earthquake destroyed almost every masonry building in Port-au-Prince. Another large quake hit in 1770 and caused the whole city to collapse.

In 1842, an earthquake destroyed the Sans-Souci Palace. Later, in 1946, a magnitude 8.0 quake hit the region. That quake even caused a tsunami. These events show that the island of Hispaniola is seismically active. This means the ground is often prone to shaking.

The damage in 2010 was truly huge. The government estimated that 250,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Many important buildings fell, such as the Presidential Palace and the main jail. Even the United Nations headquarters collapsed. Hospitals like the St. Michel District Hospital were also lost.

Roads were blocked by debris, making it hard to move. The seaport was also damaged and could not be used easily. After the main quake, 52 aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 or greater were recorded. One strong aftershock of 5.9 magnitude hit on January 20.

Helping after such a disaster is a very hard job. Many countries sent medical teams, engineers, and food.

A famous TV show called "Hope for Haiti Now" raised $58 million. Some nations even sent large hospital ships like the USNS Comfort.

These ships helped treat people when local hospitals were gone. Even though the work was difficult, people from all over the world tried to help. This event reminds us how much we rely on strong buildings and clear roads. It also shows how people come together during a crisis.
