What makes a planet rocky or giant?

Reading level 2 of 5 · DevelopingChange
1 · Shorter sentences5 · More detail

The four inner planets are rocky: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants. Uranus and Neptune are called ice giants because of their composition. Their names describe kinds of material, not a frozen surface that someone could stand on.
