What happens where tectonic plates meet?

Reading level 2 of 5 · DevelopingChange
1 · Shorter sentences5 · More detail

A plate boundary is where two tectonic plates meet. Divergent plates move apart. Convergent plates move together. Transform plates slide alongside one another. Different movements create different patterns of landforms and earthquake activity.

Word help
Tectonic plate

A moving piece of Earth’s rigid outer shell, including crust and uppermost mantle.

Subduction

One tectonic plate moving down beneath another.

Transform boundary

A boundary where plates move mainly sideways past one another.

Idealised boundary cross-sections. Arrows show relative motion, not actual speed or a forecast of earthquakes.

What to look for
  • Follow the arrows showing relative movement.
  • Compare subduction with continental collision.
  • Notice that a boundary is not necessarily a coastline.

Which movement describes a transform boundary?

Keep this idea: The relative motion of neighbouring plates helps explain what happens at their boundary.
