How can evidence help rebuild Pangaea?

Reading level 4 of 5 · FluentChange
1 · Shorter sentences5 · More detail

Tectonic plates move continents with them; continents do not simply push through a fixed ocean floor. Reconstructions combine fossil distributions, rock histories and other evidence such as ancient magnetism. Our two-strip view cannot restore an entire supercontinent or its latitude, but it can show why multiple independent matches matter.

Word help
Pangaea

A past supercontinent formed from landmasses now separated.

Fossil assemblage

A group of fossils occurring together in a geological context.

Reconstruction

An evidence-based arrangement of features as they may have existed in the past.

Original evidence-strip analogy, not real coast outlines or a measured palaeogeographic map.

What to look for
  • Compare fossil and rock bands together.
  • Separate a coastline fit from geological evidence.
  • Look for several independent matches.
Explain what you noticed

Two different continental fragments have matching outlines but fossils of very different ages. Is the outline fit alone enough?

Keep this idea: Independent fossil and rock matches strengthen a reconstruction beyond a shape fit alone.
