To measure length, read both ends of an object and subtract the start from the end. The end reading alone is not the length when the start is away from zero. Finer ruler marks make smaller differences easier to read. They do not make the object longer. Measurement interpretation distinguishes resolution from closeness to an accepted reference. The ruler’s endpoint difference estimates length even when the origin is shifted, provided both readings use the same calibrated scale. Real uncertainty includes additional contributions. The ideal diagram isolates scale divisions and endpoint subtraction, while physical measurements also involve calibration and alignment uncertainty.

An ideal on-screen ruler with illustrative dimensions. Compare scale spacing, endpoint readings and their difference.
What to look for
- End37 minus start0 gives a length of37 mm.
- End42 minus start5 still gives37 mm.
- The object has not changed; its endpoints are just harder to read exactly.
Explain what you noticed
A new object’s start reads 20 mm and its end reads 63 mm. What is its length?
Keep this idea: Use the endpoint difference and respect what the scale can actually resolve.
