Can a small object be denser than a big one?

Reading level 3 of 5 · IndependentChange
1 · Shorter sentences5 · More detail

Density is the ratio of mass to volume, often expressed in grams per cubic centimetre for solids. It compares samples fairly by asking about equal volumes. Doubling both the mass and volume preserves the ratio. The virtual blocks can represent different imagined samples; changing the controls does not claim that a real material's density can be altered arbitrarily.

Word help
mass

A measure of the amount of matter in a sample.

volume

The space a sample occupies.

Imagined uniform blocks with independently chosen mass and volume; no material identity is inferred.

What to look for
  • Same volume can hold different masses
  • Same mass can occupy different volumes
  • Proportional changes preserve the ratio
Explain what you noticed

Sample A is 12 g in 4 cm³. Sample B is 24 g in 8 cm³. Which is denser?

Keep this idea: Compare mass per equal volume, not size or mass alone.
