Some people say his rule was not fair. He did not allow much freedom for the press. Many people felt they could not speak their minds. His government also had many rules to control people.
In 2011, big protests started in Tunisia. People were unhappy with his rule and the economy. They wanted him to step down. On January 14, 2011, Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia. He left with his wife and three children. A court later sentenced him to prison in his home land. He lived in exile for many years. He died in 2019 at the age of 83.
