He completed his military education there and earned the rank of second lieutenant. Although he was not part of the social elite, he earned high respect. Al-Sallal's political rise changed the history of the region. He led revolutionary forces to depose King Muhammad al-Badr. This action ended the Kingdom of Yemen and established a republic. As president, Al-Sallal had to manage many complex political relationships. He maintained very close ties with Gamal Abdel Nasser, the president of Egypt. Egypt became the strongest ally for the Yemen Arab Republic. This alliance was vital during a war against royalists backed by Saudi Arabia. This conflict continued until the year 1970.

During his presidency, Al-Sallal also worked to stabilize the new government. He engaged in negotiations with various tribal leaders. He served as both president and prime minister for several periods. He held the prime minister title until April 26, 1963, when he appointed Abdul Latif Dayfallah. This included Al-Sallal himself, who occupied the role three times. Other notable figures included Hassan al-Amri, who held the post three times. Abdul Rahman al-Eryani also served as prime minister in 1963 and 1964. Eventually, Al-Eryani became the successor to the presidency in 1967. Al-Sallal's political life also included international diplomacy. In 1964, he participated in the 2nd Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement held in Cairo.

Al-Sallal's time in office ended through a change in leadership. In 1967, he was removed from power by a coup led by Abdul Rahman Al-Iryani. This transition of power was described as bloodless. Following his removal, Al-Sallal was exiled to Egypt. He remained living in Egypt for many years. He did not return to his home country until the early 1980s. This return was prompted by an invitation from President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Al-Sallal passed away on March 5, 1994. His legacy continued through his sons, Jamal and Ali, who both held diplomatic and political positions.
