In 1521, he was promoted to a high role in Yingtian Prefecture.

Because of this, he used the sobriquet "Zhizhi Scholar." A sobriquet is a nickname or a descriptive title. Historical records differ on which hand had the extra digit. The Dictionary of Ming Biography states it was his left hand. However, the account by Qian Qianyi says it was his right hand. Despite this, he became a highly skilled calligrapher from a very young age.

His education and career followed a path of significant achievement. He was born in 1461 in Changzhou County, in modern Suzhou.

By the age of four, he could write large characters. By age eight, he was already composing poetry. He became a certified student at age 16. In 1492, he successfully passed the provincial examination. He later served as the county magistrate of Xingning in Guangdong starting in 1514. During his five-year term, he served as the principal editor of the Gazetteer of Xingning County.

Zhu's political career reached a peak in 1521. He was promoted to the position of Controller-General of Yingtian Prefecture, which is modern Nanjing.

He did not stay in this high role for long. He resigned in less than one year. He claimed he was suffering from an illness. After his resignation, he dedicated the rest of his life to writing. He died on January 28, 1527. This period of his life was focused on his literary contributions.

As a thinker, Zhu was quite unorthodox. He was a critic of the orthodox Neo-Confucianism taught by Zhu Xi.

Instead, he admired the philosophy of mind advocated by Wang Yangming. He wrote many essays that criticized traditional values. He even described himself as a "wild man" in his later years. His judgments on historical personalities are believed to have influenced the philosopher Li Zhi. This influence can be seen in the work Cang Shu.

Zhu Yunming left behind a vast literary legacy. He completed various collections of miscellaneous notes. These include the "Collection of Huaixing Hall" and "Trivial Talks."

He also wrote "Collected Biographies of Eminent People from Suzhou" and "Memoir of By-gone Events." His life was so interesting that it inspired popular legends.
