The growth of Lens Technology followed a specific path of technological evolution. In the early 2000s, the mobile phone industry began a major transition. Manufacturers were moving away from using plastic for display screens and toward using glass. In 2003, Motorola requested that Zhou's company develop glass screens for the Razr V3 phone. This request helped spark the creation of Lens Technology as a dedicated touchscreen maker. The company then secured orders from several other major mobile-phone manufacturers. These included companies such as HTC, Nokia, and Samsung Electronics.

Lens Technology eventually became a dominant player in the global electronics market. A major turning point occurred in 2007 when the company produced touchscreens for the Apple iPhone. Today, the company supplies screens to leading electronics makers like Apple, Samsung, and Huawei. In fact, nearly 75% of the company's revenue comes from Apple and Samsung alone. The company also provides the specialized sapphire crystal screens used in the Apple Watch. This massive scale is supported by 32 different factory locations. As of 2017, the company employed approximately 90,000 people and expected to produce over a billion glass screens.

Her early life provided a stark contrast to her later wealth. Zhou was born in 1970 in Xiangxiang, Hunan province, China. She was the youngest of three children in a very poor family. Before her birth, her father lost a finger and became partially blinded in an industrial accident. Her mother passed away when Zhou was only five years old. To help her family, Zhou raised animals for food and small profits. Although she was a bright student, she dropped out of secondary school at age 16.

Even after leaving school, Zhou maintained a strong desire to acquire new skills. She moved to Shenzhen to work as a migrant worker. She chose to work near Shenzhen University so she could attend part-time courses. Through these studies, she earned certifications in several different fields. These included accounting, computer operations, and customs processing. She even became licensed to drive commercial vehicles. This dedication to learning helped her navigate her early career.
