Another title is "the secluded one," or "pearl." She is also known as "Batalatu al-Karbala" due to her role in a major historical conflict.

Zaynab was born into a family of immense religious importance. She was the eldest daughter of Fatima and Ali ibn Abi Talib. Her mother, Fatima, was the daughter of the prophet Muhammad. Her father, Ali, was Muhammad's cousin and the first Shia imam.

Sources offer different dates for her birth. Some suggest 626 CE, while others suggest 631 CE. Shia Muslims celebrate her birthday annually on 5 Jumada al-Awwal. Her grandfather, Muhammad, chose her name through divine inspiration.

Her early life involved significant personal loss. Muhammad died in 632 CE, when Zaynab was a small child. Shortly after, her mother Fatima also passed away. Shia sources claim Fatima died from injuries sustained during an attack on her home. Sunni sources offer a different view, stating she died from grief.

These events shaped Zaynab's early years. Some traditions say she even dreamed of a falling tree. This dream was interpreted as a sign of the deaths of her family members.

Zaynab was a highly educated and eloquent woman. She was trained in Quranic exegesis, which is the study of the Quran's meanings. She likely learned this from her father, Ali. She taught these subjects to women in Medina and Kufa.

Her reputation for wisdom was so great that scholars cited her father as her primary teacher. She was known for her powerful speaking skills. Historians have recorded her impassioned sermons after the Battle of Karbala.

Zaynab married her cousin, Abd Allah. He was a wealthy and generous man. Their marriage was described as a simple affair. They had four sons: Ali, Awn, Abbas, and Muhammad. They also had a daughter named Umm Kulthum.

Some historians suggest they had different numbers of children. Zaynab's life was closely tied to her brother, Husayn. Some accounts say she married on the condition that she could travel with him.

In 680 CE, the Battle of Karbala changed her life forever. This battle involved the forces of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid ibn Mua'awiya. Husayn and most of Zaynab's male relatives were killed in the conflict.

Following the battle, Zaynab and other women were taken as captives. They were marched to Kufa and then to Damascus. During this time, she gave speeches condemning Yazid. She used her voice to spread the news of the events at Karbala.

Zaynab died shortly after these events, around 682 CE. Her exact burial site remains uncertain. However, two major shrines are dedicated to her in Damascus and Cairo.
