It sits within the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area. As the most populous municipality in Jalisco, it serves as a vital urban center. The name Zapopan comes from the Nahuatl word "tzapotl," which means sapote. The suffix "-pan" means "among." Therefore, Zapopan translates to "among the sapote trees." Historically, the area was known as "ex Villa Maicera." This name refers to its former status as a corn village due to high production.

The history of the region begins long before modern cities. Between 1160 and 1325, groups like the Zapotec, Nahua, and Maya migrated south into the area. They moved around the Profundo Arroyo. These groups eventually intermingled with the Aztecs. The Tecuexes became the dominant local group, and their people are known as "Tecos." They built small shrines called "cues" to worship the sun. They also honored a principal deity named Teoplitzintli, who was associated with maize.

Spanish arrival changed the settlement forever. Nuño de Guzmán conquered the Kingdom of Tonalá, which included Zapopan, around 1530. However, the Mixtón War prevented permanent Spanish settlement until 1541. To stabilize the region after this conflict, Francisco de Bobadilla relocated about 130 Indigenous people to the area. He was an encomendero, a person granted control over local lands and people. Along with these people came a statue of the Virgin Mary. This image was used for evangelization, which is the process of spreading religious beliefs.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan is the city's most famous landmark. Construction on the current structure began in 1689 and finished in 1892. The building features a Plateresque facade, which is a highly decorative style of architecture. The main altar uses marble from Carrara and Cyprus. The statue of the Virgin Mary is truly unique. It was made by native artisans in Michoacán during the early 16th century. The statue is tall and crafted from corn stalks, or "caña de maíz." Only her hands are made of wood.

Religious significance continues to shape the city today. In 1919, Pope Benedict XV crowned the image as the Queen of Jalisco. In 1940, Pope Pius XII designated the church as a basilica. Every year on October 12, a massive procession occurs. This tradition started in 1734. The image is carried from the Guadalajara Cathedral to the Basilica. The streets become packed with spectators and vendors. Traditional dance groups perform dances like "Los Tastoanes" and "La Danza del Águila Real." Mariachi bands provide music for the crowds.

Zapopan is also a center for culture and modern activity. The Basilica houses the Huichol Museum. This museum focuses on the art and culture of the Huichol people. It also features displays from the Tepehuán and Cora peoples. Another section is the Museum of the Virgin of Zapopan. This museum holds items used for worship over many centuries. For modern entertainment, the city features the Centro Cultural Universitario. It also contains the Estadio Akron, which is the official stadium for C.D. Guadalajara.

Politically, Zapopan has seen many changes. In 1824, it was named the seat of a department in the new state of Jalisco. In 1837, it was incorporated into the Guadalajara District. The administrative structure changed many times until 1917, when the Political Constitution of Jalisco established Zapopan as a free municipality. Finally, on December 7, 1994, a state decree elevated Zapopan from a villa to a ciudad, or city. Today, it remains a central part of Jalisco's political and social life.
