Before 1996, this entire area was part of Sokoto State. The military administration of General Sani Abacha eventually detached it to form the current state. Today, Zamfara covers a total area of 38,418 square kilometres.

The geography of the state is defined by its neighbors and water sources. To the north, it shares a 32 km border with the Republic of the Niger. The southern border meets Kaduna State for 117 km. It also touches Niger to the south for 38 km. To the east lies Katsina State. The western borders are shared with Sokoto and Kebbi states. The land extends toward the bend of River Rima in the northwest. It also reaches the River Ka in the southwest.

Zamfara experiences a tropical climate with distinct seasonal shifts. Temperatures rise significantly between March and May. These months are the hottest part of the year. During these times, dust and particulate matter in the air can pose health risks. These particles can affect the lungs and worsen conditions like asthma or bronchitis.

The history of the region is very old and complex. The Zamfara Kingdom was established in the 11th century. It functioned as a city-state until the 16th century. Early inhabitants were described as hunters and giants. They established their first capital at Dutsi. The capital shifted many times, moving to Birnin Zamfara and later to Anka. In the 18th century, the Gobir Kingdom destroyed Birnin Zamfara. Later, the region became part of the Sokoto Caliphate following the 1804 jihad by Usman dan Fodio. During British colonialism, Gusau grew into a major commercial and administrative center.

Demographically, the state is home to many different ethnic groups. The Hausa people are the primary population. Within the Hausa, there are several subgroups like the Zamfarawa and the Gobirawa. The Zamfarawa live mainly in Anka, Gummi, Bukkuyum, and Talata Mafara. The Gobirawa live in Shinkafi and migrated from the Gobir Kingdom. The Burmawa subgroup is found in Bakura. The Fulani people are scattered across the state, with large groups in Bungudu, Maradun, and Gusau.

Farmers also grow groundnut, tobacco, and beans. Irrigation is necessary for growing cereals and legumes. Besides farming, the state has rich mineral deposits. These include gold, iron ore, chromate, granite, and limestone. In 2009, rising global gold prices made mining a major source of income. However, high lead concentrations in gold ore caused a lead poisoning outbreak that required international medical help.

Zamfara is also a place of significant cultural and religious importance. Islam is the principal religion, though Christianity and native religions also exist. Some native religions are still practiced in ancient settlements like Dutsi. The state was the first in Nigeria to introduce Sharia law. For travelers, there are historical sites like Mount Kwatarkwashi and the Jata settlement. Jata features a large cave used for traditional practices. The state is divided into fourteen local government areas to manage its many communities.
