Zacarias Moussaoui was born in France. He was a good handball player.

Later, he joined a group called al-Qaeda. This group wanted to hurt people. Moussaoui went to flight school in the United States. He wanted to learn how to fly large planes. An instructor named Clarence Prevost felt something was wrong. Moussaoui asked strange questions about planes. He did not seem to understand how they worked.

In August 2001, the FBI arrested Moussaoui in Minnesota. He was charged with crimes related to the September 11 attacks. Moussaoui said he was not part of those attacks. He claimed he was planning his own separate attack. A court trial took place to decide his fate. In 2006, a judge sentenced him to life in prison. The jury did not choose the death penalty. They thought his childhood was very hard.

Today, Moussaoui stays in a high-security prison in Colorado. He is the only person convicted in a U.S. civilian court for a crime linked to the 9/11 attacks.
