It also touches several Chinese provinces, including Guizhou, Sichuan, Tibet, and Guangxi. The capital city of Yunnan is Kunming. As of 2020, the province has a population of 47.2 million people. The earth beneath the surface is also very valuable. Yunnan contains China's largest reserves of aluminium, lead, zinc, and tin. There are also major deposits of copper and nickel. Additionally, the region is identified as the birthplace of tea and the origin of the cannabis plant genus.

The history of human life in Yunnan stretches back millions of years. In the 1960s, engineers found the Yuanmou Man fossil. This Homo erectus fossil is the oldest known hominid fossil in China.

It dates back approximately 1.7 million years. By the Neolithic period, people were settling near Lake Dian using stone tools. Around the 3rd century BC, the Dian Kingdom emerged near modern Kunming. This kingdom saw an influx of Chinese influence through early trade and migration.

Many different powers have controlled Yunnan throughout its long history. The Han dynasty conquered the Dian Kingdom in the late 2nd century BC. Later, the Nanzhao kingdom ruled from 738 to 937. Nanzhao was a powerful state that acted as a buffer between the Tang dynasty and the Tibetan Empire.

After Nanzhao, the Bai-ruled Dali Kingdom held power from 937 to 1253. The Mongol Empire eventually conquered the region in the 13th century. The Ming dynasty later took control after the fall of the Yuan dynasty.

Migration has played a massive role in shaping the people of Yunnan. During the Yuan and Ming dynasties, the central government sponsored population movements. These waves brought migrants from Han-majority areas in northern and southeast China. Another wave of migration occurred during World War II due to Japanese occupation in the north. These movements made Yunnan one of the most ethnically diverse provinces in China.
