history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Yuezhi were an ancient group of nomadic pastoralists. These people lived in the first millennium BC. They occupied arid grasslands in western Gansu, a modern Chinese province.

As nomads, they moved with their animals to find grazing lands. They were also skilled traders. They provided jade and strong military horses to Chinese states. In return, they received fine Chinese silk. This exchange made them a vital link in early trade networks. This activity helped connect Chinese states to Central Asia and beyond.

History shows that the Yuezhi were involved in many conflicts. They lived near the Xiongnu and the Wusun people. The Xiongnu grew much stronger over time. There were at least four wars between the Xiongnu and the Yuezhi. One major war occurred during the reign of the Xiongnu leader Touman. Later, his son Modu became a powerful ruler. In 203 BC, the Xiongnu seized large parts of Yuezhi territory. By 176 BC, the Xiongnu inflicted a crushing defeat on the Yuezhi. This defeat changed everything for the Yuezhi people.

After this defeat, the Yuezhi split into two distinct groups. These were the Greater Yuezhi and the Lesser Yuezhi. This split caused a massive domino effect across Asia.

The Lesser Yuezhi moved toward the southern mountains. They settled near the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Some lived among the Qiang people in Qinghai. Others may have founded the city-state of Cumuḍa in the eastern Tarim. Some scholars even suggest they became part of the Jie people. This group helped establish the Later Zhao state in the 4th century AD.

The Greater Yuezhi began a long migration northwest around 165 BC. They first settled in the Ili Valley. There, they displaced the Sakas, also known as the Sai.

However, the Wusun attacked them in 132 BC. This forced the Greater Yuezhi to move southwest again. They passed through the civilization of Dayuan. Eventually, they settled in Bactria on the northern bank of the Oxus River.

This region is known as Transoxiana. It covers parts of modern Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

In the 1st century BC, the Yuezhi were organized into five major tribes. One tribe was called the Kushanas. They began to absorb other tribes and neighboring peoples. This led to the rise of the Kushan Empire. At its peak in the 3rd century AD, the empire was immense. It stretched from Turfan in the north to Pataliputra in India.

The Kushanas were essential to the development of the Silk Road. They also helped introduce Buddhism to China. Their influence helped connect different cultures through religion and commerce.

Many scholars believe the Yuezhi were an Indo-European people. They are often identified with the Tocharians. This means their ethnic origins were likely linked to western groups.

Some researchers have looked for links to the Tarim mummies. However, no evidence currently confirms such a connection. The name Yuezhi is written with characters meaning "moon" and "clan." Different scholars use different ways to write this name in English. Despite these different names, their impact on Asian history remains clear.

The story of the Yuezhi shows how human movement shapes the world. Their migration was the first historically recorded movement of peoples from the high plateaus.

A single defeat led to the creation of empires and new trade routes. They moved from simple nomadic life to ruling vast territories. Their journey connected the Mediterranean and Europe to the East. By studying the Yuezhi, we see how one group can change many lands for centuries.
