Long ago, a group of people lived on grasslands.
One day, a group called the Xiongnu fought them. This was a big fight. The Yuezhi had to leave their homes.
The people split into two groups. One group moved to the mountains. The other group moved far away to new lands.
They became very good at trading. They traded pretty jade and strong horses. They even helped spread new ideas.
This group changed how many lands lived together. It was a very big change for the world.
The Yuezhi were an ancient group of people.
Around 176 BC, a group called the Xiongnu attacked them. The Yuezhi lost a big war. This forced them to split into two groups. One group was the Lesser Yuezhi. They moved toward the mountains. The other group was the Greater Yuezhi.
The Greater Yuezhi moved far away to the northwest. They traveled to a place called Bactria. Later, one of their tribes became very powerful. They were called the Kushanas. They built the Kushan Empire. This empire was very big. It reached from China to India.
The Kushanas helped the Silk Road. This was a famous trade route. They also helped spread Buddhism to China. Their choices changed the history of much of Asia for many years.
The Yuezhi were an ancient group of nomadic people. They lived a long time ago in dry grasslands. This area was in the western part of Gansu, a province in China.
Around 176 BC, a group called the Xiongnu attacked them. The Xiongnu were a strong group that grew more powerful over time. There were at least four wars between these two peoples. After a very big defeat, the Yuezhi had to split up. They became two separate groups called the Greater Yuezhi and the Lesser Yuezhi.
The Greater Yuezhi began a long journey to the northwest. They first moved into the Ili Valley. Later, they were moved again by a group called the Wusun.

The Kushan Empire became very large and important. At its peak in the 3rd century AD, it was huge. It stretched from Turfan in the north down to India in the south.

Learning about the Yuezhi helps us see how people move. Their journey shows how one event can change many lands. The Lesser Yuezhi also moved to different places. Some went toward the Tibetan Plateau to live with the Qiang people. Others may have helped start cities or even new states.
The Yuezhi were an ancient group of nomadic pastoralists. These people lived in the first millennium BC. They occupied arid grasslands in western Gansu, a modern Chinese province.
History shows that the Yuezhi were involved in many conflicts. They lived near the Xiongnu and the Wusun people. The Xiongnu grew much stronger over time. There were at least four wars between the Xiongnu and the Yuezhi. One major war occurred during the reign of the Xiongnu leader Touman. Later, his son Modu became a powerful ruler. In 203 BC, the Xiongnu seized large parts of Yuezhi territory. By 176 BC, the Xiongnu inflicted a crushing defeat on the Yuezhi. This defeat changed everything for the Yuezhi people.
After this defeat, the Yuezhi split into two distinct groups. These were the Greater Yuezhi and the Lesser Yuezhi. This split caused a massive domino effect across Asia.
The Greater Yuezhi began a long migration northwest around 165 BC. They first settled in the Ili Valley. There, they displaced the Sakas, also known as the Sai.

In the 1st century BC, the Yuezhi were organized into five major tribes. One tribe was called the Kushanas. They began to absorb other tribes and neighboring peoples. This led to the rise of the Kushan Empire. At its peak in the 3rd century AD, the empire was immense. It stretched from Turfan in the north to Pataliputra in India.
Many scholars believe the Yuezhi were an Indo-European people. They are often identified with the Tocharians. This means their ethnic origins were likely linked to western groups.
The story of the Yuezhi shows how human movement shapes the world. Their migration was the first historically recorded movement of peoples from the high plateaus.
