Historians often call his reign the "second founding" of the Ming dynasty. This is because he introduced massive changes to the political system. He transformed how the government functioned and how the empire interacted with the world. His leadership shaped the direction of China for many years.

Zhu Di's rise to power began with a period of intense conflict. In 1399, he rebelled against his nephew, the Jianwen Emperor. This conflict was a civil war known as the Jingnan campaign. The name means the "campaign to clear away disorders."

The war involved three years of heavy fighting across northern China. In 1402, Zhu Di emerged victorious from the struggle. He then declared himself the emperor. This victory allowed him to establish a new style of imperial rule that differed from his father's.

One of the Emperor's most significant actions was moving the center of power. In 1403, he elevated Beijing to the status of a second capital. This decision diminished the importance of the old capital, Nanjing. To make Beijing a true center, he ordered massive construction projects.

Zhu Di was also a great supporter of knowledge and culture. He sponsored the creation of the Yongle Encyclopedia. To complete this massive task, he employed around two thousand scholars.

This work was larger than all previous encyclopedias, including the Four Great Books of Song. He also used Neo-Confucian texts to train his government officials. These officials had to pass civil service examinations held every three years. While he could be harsh with those who failed, he also rewarded capable people. This helped create a more professional and stable administration.

The Emperor's personal life included a strong partnership with his wife, Lady Xu. She was known for her intelligence and decisive nature. Zhu Di was also a man of action who often ruled "from horseback." This meant he traveled frequently between the two capitals. He was a skilled military leader who spent much of his life training. In his youth, he lived in Beiping, which is modern-day Beijing. He served as the Prince of Yan and protected the northeastern borders. He learned military logistics and how to manage large groups of soldiers.

Foreign policy was another major part of his rule. The Emperor wanted to strengthen China's position in East Asia. He sent out diplomatic missions and military expeditions to many different regions. These trips reached as far as Manchuria, Korea, Japan, and the Philippines.

Some maritime expeditions, led by Zheng He, went even further. They reached Southeast Asia, India, Persia, and East Africa. These voyages brought new people and goods to the empire. One famous example was a giraffe brought from Bengal in 1414.

Despite his successes, the Emperor faced constant military challenges. The Mongols remained the most serious threat to his empire's security. They were divided into different groups, such as the eastern Mongols and the western Oirats.

The Emperor personally led five military campaigns into Mongolia to address this threat. He also fought a long war in Đại Việt, which is now northern Vietnam. This war started in 1407 and lasted until he died. Although he was a strong leader, his wars did not change the balance of power. The northern borders remained unstable even after his death in 1424.
