Yohannes IV was a powerful Emperor of Ethiopia.

In his youth, Yohannes became a leader through many battles. He first appeared in politics when he visited the court of Emperor Tewodros II. At that time, Yohannes was given the low title of balambaras. He soon rebelled against the rule of Tewodros II. He spent time living among the Afar people in the lowlands. During this time, he married a woman named Tebaba Sellasie. He then returned to the highlands to build his own power. He won several battles against different local leaders. By 1868, he was a very strong figure in the region.
One major event changed how Yohannes fought his battles. In 1868, a British military group came to Ethiopia. They wanted to free captives held by Tewodros II. Yohannes chose to help the British forces led by Sir Robert Napier. He protected their supply paths and kept the roads safe. Because of this help, the British gave him many modern weapons. He received about 900 muskets and rifles. He also got six mortars and six howitzers. A British man named John C. Kirkham stayed to train his troops. This training helped Yohannes use his new tools very well.
After Tewodros II died, Yohannes fought to become the main leader. He faced a rival named Tekle Giyorgis II. Even though the rival had a larger army, Yohannes had better weapons. They fought a big battle at Adwa on July 11, 1871. Yohannes won this battle and became the Emperor. ]]. As Emperor, he wanted to keep Ethiopia united. He traveled to many different regions to meet with local governors. He wanted to make sure everyone stayed loyal to the state. He also worked to make Christianity a very strong part of the country. It is said he helped 550,000 people join the Christian faith.
Being an Emperor was a hard job with many enemies. Yohannes had to defend Ethiopia from an invasion by Egypt. He also fought against a leader named Muhammad Ahmad during the Mahdist War. These were difficult times for the whole country. Finally, Yohannes died in 1889 at the Battle of Gallabat.

Yohannes IV was the Emperor of Ethiopia from 1871 to 1889.
Born Lij Kahssai Mercha around 1837, Yohannes had a complex royal lineage. His father, Mercha Wolde Kidan, was the šum of Tembien. His mother, Silas Dimtsu, came from the ruling families of Enderta and Agame. Through his paternal grandmother, he also descended from the Gondrar-Branch of the Solomonic dynasty. This heritage connected him to several powerful ruling families across the region. His early life was difficult, as he suffered from serious illnesses during childhood.
In his early political career, Yohannes was given the low title of balambaras. This happened after he visited the imperial court of Emperor Tewodros II in the mid-1860s. Shortly after, he rebelled against the Emperor's rule. Some sources suggest he was unhappy with his rank. Others believe he responded to the calls of abunä Salama, a religious leader who criticized the Emperor. During his rebellion, Yohannes found refuge among the Afar people in the eastern lowlands. There, he married a woman named Tebaba Sellasie after her baptism.
To build his power, Yohannes launched military campaigns against various local leaders. He defeated several officials, including the šum seraye Gebre Mikael and the däjazmač Tekle Giyorgis Qalos. He eventually assumed the title of däjazmač after his victories. A French explorer described Yohannes as a man of great physical strength and mental energy. The explorer noted his muscular build and his persuasive way of speaking.
A turning point in his rise to power occurred during the British expedition to Abyssinia in 1868. The British, led by Sir Robert Napier, arrived to free captives held by Tewodros II. Yohannes chose to assist the British by protecting their supply routes and telegraph lines. In return, he received a massive amount of modern military equipment. This included six mortars, six howitzers, and approximately 900 muskets and rifles. He also received 585,480 percussion primers.
This military aid significantly changed the balance of power in Ethiopia. A British instructor named John C. Kirkham stayed to train Yohannes's troops in using these modern weapons. This training proved vital when Yohannes faced his rival, Tekle Giyorgis II. Although Tekle Giyorgis had a larger army, he lacked the advanced weaponry and training. On July 11, 1871, Yohannes defeated his rival at the Battle of Adwa. This victory allowed him to claim the imperial throne. ]]
As Emperor, Yohannes focused on national unity and religious dominance. He toured the country to meet with governors and demand their loyalty. He also worked to strengthen the presence of Christianity in Ethiopia. It is estimated that he oversaw the conversion of 550,000 Oromos and Jebertis to the Christian faith. However, his reign was also marked by conflict. He fought against Isma'il Pasha of Egypt and Muhammad Ahmad during the Mahdist War.
His life ended during a period of intense military struggle. Yohannes IV died on March 10, 1889, at the Battle of Gallabat. He had spent much of his reign defending Ethiopia from large-scale Egyptian invasions. His leadership helped shape the modern borders and identity of the nation. Today, his legacy is preserved through monuments and historical records.
