In the past, yogins practiced very few poses, and most were for sitting. They often lived very simple lives and followed strict diets. Some even used animal skins as rugs to sit on while they meditated.

Modern yoga changed a lot during the 1900s. A teacher named Krishnamacharya is often called the "father of modern yoga."

He lived in Mysore and mixed Haṭha yoga with wrestling and gymnastics. In the 1920s, the Rajah of Aundh helped make the Surya Namaskar sequence popular. This sequence is called the "Salute to the Sun." Other teachers like B. K. S. Iyengar wrote famous books about these poses. Indra Devi even taught yoga to many famous people in Hollywood.

Yoga has spread from India to many other places like America and Europe.

This modern form of yoga is a global phenomenon. It is widely practiced across Europe and the United States. Scholars often refer to this specific version as modern postural yoga. It is also sometimes called transnational anglophone yoga.

The practice functions through the systematic movement of the body. Practitioners move through asanas to achieve specific physical or mental effects. These asanas are categorized by movement type, body position, or intended effect.

Some styles focus on aerobic intensity to increase heart rates. Others, such as Iyengar Yoga, emphasize precise bodily alignment. Certain traditions like Sivananda Yoga focus on spiritual elements. Kundalini Yoga focuses on the awakening of energy. While ancient Haṭha yoga included many purifications, modern exercise-based yoga often leaves these out.

There are many distinct styles of modern yoga. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga was created by Pattabhi Jois. This style eventually led to the development of Power Yoga. B. K. S. Iyengar founded Iyengar Yoga, which focuses on alignment. He defined many modern postures in his 1966 book, "Light on Yoga."

The history of yoga as exercise is a complex journey. Originally, yoga was a spiritual practice focused on meditation. The goal was to unite the human spirit with the divine.

Ancient Haṭha yoga, meaning "force," was practiced by secretive ascetic groups. These yogins often lived simply and followed strict vegetarian diets. They used very few asanas, most of which were seated. Standing poses were very rare before the year 1900. Posture practice was actually revived in the 1920s by gurus like Yogendra and Kuvalayananda. They emphasized the health benefits of these movements.

In the 1920s, several key developments occurred in India. The Rajah of Aundh, Bhawanrao Shrinivasrao Pant Pratinidhi, pioneered Surya Namaskar. This is a flowing sequence known as "Salute to the Sun."

Between the 1930s and 1950s, Krishnamacharya developed a new style in Mysore. He combined Haṭha yoga with wrestling exercises and Western gymnastics. His work was influenced by the physical culture of the time. This included systems like the gymnastics of Niels Bukh. Krishnamacharya is often called the "father of modern yoga" because of this influence.

The scale of yoga has grown significantly over time. Early Haṭha yoga texts described only 2 to 84 poses. Modern works now describe up to 2,100 different asanas.

Yoga connects to many different social and cultural ideas. Its relationship with Hinduism is a subject of much debate. Some people view it as purely secular exercise for relaxation. Others see it as a spiritual practice or personal ritual. There have been debates regarding its religious connections. Some groups have argued it is connected to Hinduism, while others have rejected it for that reason. Despite these debates, yoga continues to bridge different cultures through movement.
