His early life was shaped by the values of his Labor Zionist household. His father, Nehemiah, was born in present-day Ukraine. His mother, Rosa, was born in Belarus and became a local activist in Tel Aviv. Yitzhak attended the School House for Workers' Children in Tel Aviv. This school provided him with a foundation in both academics and agriculture. He later enrolled in an agricultural school at kibbutz Givat Hashlosha. While he originally wanted to become an irrigation engineer, his interest shifted toward military service. This change happened as regional tensions increased during the late 1930s.
