The climate in Yinchuan is classified as a cold desert climate, known as Köppen BWk. This means the region experiences distinct and varied seasons. Winters are typically dry and cold. Summers are short and hot. Because the air is very arid, there is a large diurnal temperature variation. This means the temperature changes significantly between day and night. Yinchuan has a history that stretches back tens of thousands of years. The Shuidonggou site proves people lived there during the Paleolithic age, over 30,000 years ago. Later, prehistoric people created rock art in the Helan Mountains. In the 1st century BCE, the area was a county called Fuping. By the 6th century CE, it was renamed Huaiyuan. The city saw great changes during the Tangut-led Western Xia empire. In 1038, the leader Yuanhao made the city his capital. At that time, the city was known as Xingqing. Many cultural landmarks, such as the Pagoda of Chengtian, were built during this era. Later, the Mongols invaded in 1209. The city, then called Zhongxing, was besieged by Mongol forces. In 1227, the Mongols returned and destroyed the entire population. The famous leader Genghis Khan died during this siege.

Natural disasters have also shaped the city's past. In 1739, the Yinchuan–Pingluo earthquake struck the region. This event reached a maximum intensity of XII on the Chinese seismic intensity scale. It was also rated XI on the Mercalli intensity scale. The earthquake was devastating and leveled the city. Most houses, temples, and even the wide city walls collapsed. Ground fissures opened up to one meter wide. Large amounts of sand and black water erupted from the earth. The quake killed more than 15,300 people. Fires burned through the night because many canals were destroyed. This cut off the water supply to the city. Aftershocks continued for more than two years.

Today, Yinchuan is a large and growing urban center. As of the 2020 census, the administrative area had 2,859,074 inhabitants. By the end of 2024, the resident population reached 2,914,700. This was an increase of 66,600 people from the previous year. The population is diverse, with 72.43% being Han Chinese and 25.79% being Hui. The city is a vital agricultural hub for the surrounding plains. It uses an irrigation system developed as far back as the Han and Tang dynasties. Yinchuan processes grain, flour, and oil. It also handles animal products and wool from local herds. The city hosts the China–Arab States Expo to build commercial links with Arab nations.
