Yi Sun-sin was a legendary Korean admiral and military general.
He lived during the Joseon period. He is most famous for his naval victories against Japan. These battles occurred during the Imjin War. This war began when Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered an invasion of Korea in 1592. The goal was to use Korea as a base to conquer Ming China. Yi is remembered as one of history's greatest naval commanders. His strategic intelligence and leadership helped protect his country during a very difficult time.
Admiral Yi’s military success relied on clever tactics and new technology. One of his most important innovations was the turtle ship.
These were specialized warships designed for combat. He also used a formation called the "crane wing." In this tactic, ships formed a wide semicircle to surround the enemy. This allowed the Korean fleet to fire many cannonballs at once. Such methods allowed him to win even when his forces were small. He was known for his ability to use the environment to his advantage.
Yi was born in 1545 in Hanseong, which is modern-day Seoul.
His family belonged to the Deoksu Yi clan. His father, Yi Chŏng, did not work in government service. This meant Yi had to find his own way to succeed. As a child, he enjoyed playing war games. He often acted as the leader of his group. He even carried a bow and arrows to play. These early interests showed his growing leadership skills.
His path to becoming an admiral was not easy. In 1576, he took a military examination. He was a very skilled archer. However, he failed his first attempt because he broke a leg during the cavalry section. He tried again and eventually passed. Later, he served in the Northern Frontier Army. There, he fought against Jurchen marauders. In 1583, he successfully captured their chief, Mu Pai Nai. Despite these wins, jealous superiors falsely accused him of desertion. He was stripped of his rank and even imprisoned and tortured. He eventually returned to service as an enlisted soldier.
Despite these setbacks, Yi rose to high command again. He was appointed Commander of the Left Jeolla Naval District in 1591. He used this time to prepare for the coming war. He built up the regional navy and improved its strength.
This preparation was vital when the Japanese invasion began in 1592. While the Japanese army moved quickly toward Seoul, Yi's navy fought to stop them at sea. He led several successful campaigns in the first months of the war. He won battles at Okpo and Sacheon. In the Battle of Okpo, his fleet destroyed many Japanese ships without losing a single Korean ship.
Admiral Yi's record in battle is truly remarkable. It is generally accepted that he fought in at least 23 naval battles. He won every single one of them. One of his most famous victories was the Battle of Myeongnyang. In this battle, he led only 13 Korean ships. He used them to defeat a Japanese fleet of at least 133 ships. This victory showed his incredible strategic vision. He also led the fleet during the Battle of Hansan Island. His ability to manage large-scale naval operations remains a subject of study today.
The Imjin War ended with the Battle of Noryang in 1598. This was the last major battle of the conflict. Sadly, Yi Sun-sin died from a gunshot wound during this battle. His death marked the end of a major era in Korean history. His wartime journals, called the Nanjung Ilgi, are very important documents. They are even part of UNESCO's Memory of the World initiative. Today, his legacy lives on through many films and monuments.
His face even appears on the South Korean 100 Won coin.
